Location Shoot at Queensland Art Gallery (GOMA)

Cassie and Leo leaning on the rail, city backdrop in golden hour

You don't need to get married at QAGOMA to shoot your wedding photos at the Queensland Art Gallery — it's one of my go-to locations for a portrait session, whether that's engagement photos, bridal portraits, or squeezing in a few shots before the real reception starts elsewhere.

The Sculpture Courtyard is two levels of manicured lawn around the Dandelion fountain and a reflection pond, with sculpture (including a Rodin) scattered through it — even a few resident water dragons. Up on GOMA's level four, the Roof Terrace is open-air but roof-shaded, with panoramic views over the river, city and Kurilpa Bridge. Both are public outdoor spaces, easy to shoot in without booking the venue itself.

Best time to shoot: late afternoon, 4:30–6pm. Low sun softens the courtyard's water features, and the Roof Terrace gets its best light over the bridge right before it fades. Bonus — GOMA lights up from within every night at sunset, so even after-dark portraits get a glow no other Brisbane location can match.

Don't treat the sculptures like backdrops. The best shots happen when you actually pause by a piece you like — that's when it stops looking staged.

If you're picturing a Queensland Art Gallery location shoot for your own wedding photos, let's talk.
